“Silently Beats the Drum” is the first book of the Jeb Patton series, “The Plains.” Jeb, fighting for the lost Southern cause during the Civil War, loses his right leg in a no-name battle. On the way home after his discharge, he meets two runaway slaves (Moses and Faye) and brings them home to Missouri with him. He discovers the love of Nancy , which kept him alive during the horrible war, has been lost. Frustrated and Angry, he and his new black friends head to the shinning mountains to start a new life.
