MUCKs and MUCKing
What IS a MUCK?
I think it stands for 'Multi User Chat Kingdom'. It is sort of like a chat room, but instead of being a single 'chat room', it is an entire chat world, consisting of many rooms connected to eachother, rather like a text adventure game with multiple players and usually no set adventure. Unlike in a chatroom, the 'rooms' have textual descriptions and so do the avatars of the 'players'. There are primarily two kinds of MUCKs as far as I am concerned...
Social MUCKs
These MUCKs pretty much act as a bunch of chat rooms - The primary activity on them is socializing. Most of the players connect to hang out in some central area, and some meet in private rooms where noone else is.
Roleplaying MUCKs
These are the kind of MUCKs I tend to frequent. These MUCKs exist primarily for roleplaying in a fictional world. This may be a world based on some creative work (Anything from Roger Zelazny's Chronicles of Amber to The X-Men to Pokemon), a world based on multiple works, or perhaps a completely original world. The players play characters either of their own creation or, on a MUCK based on a creative work, Feature Characters (characters from the work(s) the MUCK is based on; ie, Wolverine on an X-Men MUCK).
Of course, there is still a good deal of socializing on roleplay-oriented MUCKs, just as a group of people playing a game of Dungeons & Dragons will always talk about things besides the game at least a little bit. And just as here in this world a group of people may get together and play an RPG, a group of people on a Social-oriented MUCK may gather in a private room and roleplay.
