True Combat: Superreal Modification for Quake 3
Gamers can skip the following paragraph.
By the way, I'm not going to explain FPS games here. If you're offended when I talk about shooting and killing on this page, remember I'm just talking about a GAME. It's not REAL, and playing these games does NOT teach you how to fire REAL guns, nor does it make you into a killer. The few people who played violent games before going out and killing people had much bigger issues that lead to what they did. (While I'm at it, D&D doesn't teach people magic. It's a game. Make-believe. PRETEND, you idiots. It's no more real magic than a little kid dressed up as Harry Potter or a witch or something for halloween. In fact the people who play RPGs tend to be older, and better at telling apart fantasy and reality. People who can't tell fantasy from reality will have problems whether they play D&D or not. RPGs are just a form of interactive storytelling, a grown-up version of make-believe with rules) FPS games are no more evil than some kids playing cops & robbers (except FPSs have rules so there's no argument about who shot who) or manhunt. Now, where was I? Oh yeah...
Sorry about that. I'll have to make a seperate page for my anti-anti-gaming opinions.
This page needs some screenshots. But anyway...
I'm not sure what I liked so much about this mod. Perhaps it's because you need to think a bit more when you can't survive fifty chaingun rounds to the head. Or grenades. Sure in regular Quake 3 you could try to hide and ambush someone, but unless they were low on health they'd just survive and shoot you back. Also, you have to think about what guns you select when you can't carry ten guns with a ton of ammo for each (by the way, ammunition is REALLY HEAVY.). Not that that is necessarily bad, Quake DM is a game all it's own and as unrealistic as it may have been, getting the rocket launcher and dominating Q1DM4 with it was very fun.
Anyway, back to True Combat. Yes, weight IS tracked, and I guess carrying more stuff slows you down. You can carry a primary gun, a secondary gun, and a handgun, with up to four extra clips of ammo for each. Also 2 frag grenades and 2 smoke or flashbang grenades. The primaries include two sniper rifles, two assault rifles, and a shotgun. In this mod, I dislike using scopes, just because it really limits how much you can see, you have huge blind spots people could attack you from. If I'm going to 'snipe' I prefer to use an assault rifle or pistol, I might not be able to shoot all the way across the map accurately but at least I can see who's shooting at ME.
Secondary weapons include the MP5, the UMP45 submachinegun (more damage, less accurate than MP5), and the S-90 shotgun. They're accurate at like 20 feet but no good for sniping. The S-90 seems to do less damage and take more time to reload than the Saiga. I used to think the S-90 couldn't kill (armored targets) in one shot, bit I guess it depends on how good the shot is. I guess the Saiga fires more pellets or something.
Handguns give you a choice between a .50 Desert Eagle and a H&K .45. The H&K and MP5 can have silencers, but I don't see the point. The handguns seem to be more accurate than the submachineguns, but aren't automatic. I've tried to snipe with handguns when using the Saiga as my primary weapon, with mixed success. This is best attempted when your target is distracted, especially if they have a sniper rifle. Do NOT take on a sniper 1on1 at long range with a handgun. You'll miss and they'll nail you. I know, I tried in the snow room on deadlyxmas.
Grenades. Frag grenades are quite lethal if they go off anywhere near you. If you see one land next to you, you're dead. You CANNOT run far away enough before it goes off. If you can see who threw it and you have a gun out, you can try to take them down with you. If you happen to have your grenades readied, pull the pin out. You'll drop it when their grenade kills you, but with any luck they'll be near your grenade when it goes off. The best uses for a frag grenade are 1. using indirect fire to kill snipers, if you know where a sniper is you can throw a grenade in their window from out of their sight. and 2. for when the enemies in the next room have their guns pointed at the door/corner so you can't run in and shoot them. Flash bangs seem best used when you think enemies are in the next room, but you don't know where exactly enough to hit them with a grenade. Throw in a flash bang and run in after, they'll be blind and easy pickings (Although they might have a frag grenade, so watch out for that). Flash bangs are for when you want to prevent people in a very small area from being able to see anything. Smoke grenades, on the other hand, are for when you want to prevent EVERYONE from seeing a small area. i.e. enemy snipers are covering your base so there's no way for anyone to get in or out safely. Smoke grenade your base and for a little while they won't be able to see anyone in it.
For armor you can have a kevlar vest and a helmet. Take both unless you desperately need the speed for some tactic.
Misc Stuff:
My weapon loadout keeps changing. Originally I carried as many guns as I could just because I could. That was pointless. The first thing I learned is not to carry more ammo than I will use. It's just extra weight. I carry one extra clip per gun, if I actually run out of ammo then from then on I need another clip (So far I have yet to need more than two spare clips for any weapon -- I almost always die before I can use up even 1 spare clip, unless I sit in one place and shoot all the enemies that walk by before they can shoot me (Ie, sniping in the Harbor, or when on the blue team in Fracture, sitting on the barrels in the room where people drop out of the vent. Whatever you do, do NOT walk under the vent and shoot up. If they don't shoot you first, they'll back up and drop a grenade on your head. The barrels are out of grenade explosion range though, and even flashbangs dropped from the vent only completely blind you for a split second at that range. From there you can also see the other entrance to the room enemies may come through, the only entrance you won't be watching is the one from your base, enemies rarely seem to bother coming in that way, usually if they're in your base their concern is getting the case and making a run for it, unless they choose that route back you'll be fine. This is not the case for every level though and it depends on how well-defended your base is. On Bahamut, snipers and grenaders will ALWAYS find their way into the buildings overlooking the blue base because you don't actually have to enter the blue base to get to those places. I started out carrying an assault rifle for long range and 'sniping' and a shotgun for close range. Then I realized that assault rifles work well in close range too, so it's kind of redundant. After awhile though I decided I liked the Saiga because it was a guaranteed one-shot-kill at close range. But then I could not carry an assault rifle for sniping and had to use a handgun. Also, at over 10 feet you're unlikely to hit with the shotgun if you don't aim, and you have to slow down when you aim. So I added the more accurate MP5 to my guns. So now I kind of keep switching back and forth between that loadout and just carrying an AK47. I always carry two frag grenades and two flashbangs. If a smoke grenade is needed, usually someone else on the team will have them and use them.
If you run out of ammo for a gun, you might want to drop it if there isn't any ammo nearby. It's less to carry, and also frees up the weapon slot for guns anyone else drops. Also, although some vertical things like ladders you will automatically put your weapon away to climb, some things you have to manually do so before you can climb them. For a quick laugh, jump on top of a crouching teammate. They will look up at you, amused. This also may be a way to get to places you otherwise can't reach, though I have yet to see it used as such. An enemy who sees two people standing on top of eachother may also be confused for the split-second it takes for the two to kill him. Oh, and people never seem to check behind the counter in that room over the blue base on bahamut. Sometimes I wait there and then knife any enemies that walk by obliviously and try to start sniping from the hallway. Anyway, that's all for now, maybe I'll write more later.
