Reviews
"Blending colourful character detail with farce, what we have here is
a standard comic plot structure fused with contemporary, somewhat risque
subject matter. In other words, gross-out. But despite the blow-job jokes,
the porno gags and the dead dog scenes, this isn't pure teen fodder. The
racial concerns of the multicultural London setting combined with the
sense of twentysomething ennui makes the predicaments of the characters
more involving than many of its US gross-out counterparts, and a good
sight more realistic. We care about whether Jess will be accepted by the
family of the Asian girl he's fallen for; whether the boys will be off
the hook with the vengeful Jesus and even if CJ's girlfriend will choose
between him or her dog. Above all, though, this is a comedy of errors,
with decent gags." (Channel 4 Film)
"Dog Eat Dog can take its place among the very worst British gangster flicks of the past three years. The only thing in its favour is that Rhys Ifans isn't in it." - Christopher Tooky (Daily Mail)
"The intention is to create a comedy of modern city manners that takes in dreams, drugs, pornography, clubbing and football. The worst thing is the attitude towards women, the best is the energetic performances. " - Derek Malcolm (The Guardian, December 2001)
"The film does have a few choice moments - not least Alan Davies' cameo as a stoned pornographer - which suggests that writer/star Mark Tonderai and writer/director Moody Shoaibi should be given the benefit of the doubt. Best of all, it's a story of inner city kids that manages to put London's multiculturalism onscreen without ever having to turn race into a dramatic issue or present West London as a gun-filled battleground of rival gangs." - Jamie Russell (BBC Films, November 2001)
"Director Shoaibi's multiracial cast turns in fine ensemble performances. Refreshingly, however, the movie's focus is neither racial nor dark and cynical a la Tarantino. Moreover, the ending is an acceptably corny "happy ever after," making for good entertainment with good quality." - Michael Hoover (Orlando Weekly, June 2001)
